READING, Pa. – Former Wilson Area High School basketball standout and pro player Zakiyah Winfield is sharing her skills.
“Just wanted to give back to the community, you know, I had camps I was going to when I was younger. I just wanted to give my talent onto the youth and I’m able to do that,” said Winfield.
More than 100 children took part in her fourth annual basketball camp at Alvernia University in Reading on Sunday.
“It’s really just a blessing being here with all these kids just supporting you know, Berks County basketball again,” said Winfield.
Attendees practiced everything from dribbling to shooting. It is a game she is helping to grow right here in Berks County.
“I feel like the game, it was lost a little bit in Berks County, so it’s good to see it’s coming back again. So, I’m just really inspired by the change that I’m able to create for myself as well as people who are helping me through this journey,” said Winfield.
Winfield said there is one thing in particular she wants all of the children here to learn.
“I’m hoping that they take away that you can have fun while playing basketball. It doesn’t always have to be so serious. You have a day of fun, competing, learning and just growth,” said Winfield. “My favorite part is seeing the kids have fun. I think that’s the best part for me,” said Winfield.
