A collection of classic and collectible cars will soon be up for grabs, and each winning bid will be going toward a good cause.

SCRANTON, Pa. — A field filled with cars sits tucked away on the property of North East Pennsylvania Auto Auction in Scranton.

It’s the private collection of the late James ‘Jim’ Caputo that will soon be going up for sale, all for a good cause.

“You know, sad to hear of his passing, but, you know, really excited in the way that he wanted to do what he wanted to do with his inventory and, um, you know, all the, all the proceeds for the sale are going to Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital,” said James Gaughan, North East Pennsylvania Auto Auction Inc.

James Gaughan is part of the family-owned auction business that has the opportunity to sell off Caputo’s vast car collection, assortment of parts, and other estate items.

“I know for a fact the Mangusta; they made 411 of them total. The rarity of these vehicles, and I think the opportunity to come and purchase a vehicle like this, you know, car enthusiasts around the area are gonna be very, very excited to come here,” said Gaughan.

A Ferrari, several Studebakers, and cars from across the pond make up the more than 50 vehicles for sale.

Pieces of automotive history that Gaughan says anyone can buy. “We’re normally just a dealer only auction, we deal in wholesale of you know used vehicles at dealerships trade in but now for this sale and the inventory that we have here and the excitement that’s been building about this inventory we knew there was no other choice but to open it up to the public and and make sure that everyone had a fair shot to come in and bid on these vehicles.”

Pre-registration and accepted forms of payment are required.

But Gaughan says once you’re in, there’s a chance to get the car of your dreams and give to an organization that Jim cared about so much. “Just the fact that all of this stuff and the fact that Jim Caputo decided that all this, all this wealth that he, he accumulated throughout his life, he wanted to give back and give to Saint Jude’s Children’s Hospital, it’s, it’s a huge thing for us.”

Auction day is scheduled for Saturday, August 22, with doors opening at 9 a.m. and bids beginning at noon.

A representative from Caputo’s estate says that if things go well, they expect to donate a combined $2 million to St. Jude’s.
