DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission announced it plans to build new access points that are intended to reduce traffic and make roads safer in the Harrisburg area.

The ramps would be built near Milepost 251 on the PA Turnpike, which would connect drivers in both directions to Route 283 in Dauphin County, according to the commission.

The commission hopes to build the ramps within the next five years in both the east and westbound directions.

“Adding new access points to the Pennsylvania Turnpike from 283 will help relieve congestion, improve traffic flow and keep Pennsylvanians moving safely and efficiently,” Secretary of Transportation Michael Carroll said in a release.

Traffic often gets backed up in this area, which can lead to crashes due to sudden stops, according to the commission. The ramps are intended to help solve that problem by giving drivers another exit point.
