About Paul Sokoloski: The pilot, doctor killed in Pennsylvania aircraft crash
CARLISLE, Pa. —
A Cessna 150 collided with a Pennsylvania State Police helicopter at Carlisle Airport on Wednesday, August 19, killing the airplane’s pilot and injuring two members of the state police aviation team, according to officials.
The Cumberland County Coroner’s Office identified the Cessna pilot who died in the crash as Dr. Paul Sokoloski, 57, of Hershey.
Sokoloski was a doctor at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, according to the coroner.
Authorities believe he was the only person aboard the two-seat airplane.
Deadly aircraft crash
The collision happened around 6:52 p.m. as Sokoloski’s Cessna approached a runway from behind a Pennsylvania State Police Bell 407 helicopter, officials said.
For an unknown reason, the airplane veered sharply to the right and struck the helicopter’s tail rotor before entering its main rotor, according to police.
The Cessna crashed a short distance away and broke into multiple pieces. Sokoloski died at the scene.
Autopsy scheduled
The Cumberland County Coroner’s Office scheduled an autopsy for Tuesday, August 25.
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the cause of the collision.
