Sekela Kitchen opens at Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia – NBC10 Philadelphia

Reading Terminal Market has a new destination for Ethiopian food.

Sekela Kitchen celebrated its grand opening Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026 becoming the Philadelphia market’s first merchant offering Ethiopian cuisine.

The fast-casual restaurant serves authentic dishes including doro wat, injera and sambusa, with a build-your-own bowl-style menu available for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

For owner Marta Kebede, opening Sekela Kitchen has been a dream come true.

Kebede grew up in the kitchen of her mother’s restaurant in Ethiopia. After coming to America in 2007, she spent years working at businesses around Reading Terminal Market, including in the area that is now The Fashion District. She later served as manager of Era, an Ethiopian restaurant in Philadelphia’s Brewerytown neighborhood.

In 2017, Kebede set her sights on becoming a business owner inside Reading Terminal Market. Years of financial preparation followed, along with business planning delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, that goal has become a reality.

Reading Terminal Market is open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week.
