Marywood University announced that the Scranton Shakespeare Festival is becoming its “official resident professional theater company.”

The move “expands collaborative opportunities in theater arts, experiential learning, and community cultural development,” the university said in a media release.

The partnership is part of the vision behind Marywood’s new School of Communication, the release said, which formally launched this semester and brings together several university programs, including theater, film, TV and digital production, multimedia communication, music production and entrepreneurship, journalism and public communication, sports media, digital influencing and arts administration.

The nonprofit Scranton Shakespeare Festival assembles a paid cast of local and out-of-town performers and technical staff every summer to produce several plays and musicals. It also includes a youth ensemble. The 15th season ended recently.
