Wednesday’s 19th District showdown between crosstown rivals Bardstown and Bethlehem more than lived up to the early season hype.

The homestanding Tigers topped the Banshees in a shootout, winning 1-0 after an intense matchup at Garnis Martin Field.

It was another tight faceoff between the longtime rivals, with neither team giving an inch through 80 minutes and two 5-minute overtime periods.

The game shifted to a penalty kick shootout, which Bardstown won 5-3 to beat Bethlehem in what turned into another epic meeting. Since 2019, the Tigers and Banshees have played to a one-goal game 13 times in the last 17 games.

This one was just as tightly contested, with coaches Martin Bodkin of Bardstown and Scott Deopere of Bethlehem scheming to keep each other’s squads off the scoreboard. The Banshees outshot the Tigers 21-5, but couldn’t find the back of the net against senior keeper Raylee Brothers – who came up with 14 saves on the night.

Brothers scored what proved to be the game winner in the shootout, and then stopped Bethlehem’s final shot to preserve the victory.

Banshees keeper Reonna Morgan stopped three shots on the night.

The Tigers improved to 2-1-2 overall and 1-0 in the district, while the Banshees dropped to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the district.
