Erie City Councilmember Ed Brzezinski issued an apology Sunday evening for his comment during a city council meeting.
In a letter to the editor of Erie Gay News, Brzezinski issued a brief apology for the meeting on June 2, saying he never meant to offend people with his remark.
In his apology, Brzezinski said he’s never had a problem with the choices people make in their lives and that everyone has the right to make decisions based on their beliefs and happiness.
Brzezinski came under fire from citizens and drew condemnation from Council President Dr. Tyler Titus after a heated exchange during a June 10 city council meeting prompted Titus to remind Brzezinski to limit interruptions, to which he replied: “yes ma’am.”
Erie Gay News Editor Michael Mayler clarified the date in the apology, saying he believes Brzezinski was referring to the meeting on June 10.
Dr. Titus is openly transgender and goes by they/them pronouns and condemned the comments on his own social media page following the meeting. They were not addressed individually in Brzezinski’s apology.
At an ensuing meeting lasting an estimated five hours, the city said 58 people spoke up to address council and Mayor Daria Devlin issued her own apology. Brzezinski, a Democrat, also faced calls from his own party to apologize for the incident in June.
