West Nile virus detected in mosquitoes in Wyomissing

A mosquito sample collected in Wyomissing has tested positive for West Nile virus, officials said.

The borough was notified last week by the Berks County Conservation District, according to posts on the borough’s website and Facebook page.

Officials said the risk of transmission remains fairly low at this time.

The county’s mosquito control team will conduct additional larval and adult mosquito surveillance in the area to help reduce the potential spread of the virus. If continued virus activity is detected, an adult mosquito control treatment may become necessary, officials said.

Residents can help by taking these precautions:

• Limit time outdoors between dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are especially active.

• Wear long sleeves, long pants and closed-toe shoes when possible.

• Use an EPA-registered insect repellent and follow the product directions.

• Check your property for standing water and empty it regularly, including birdbaths, buckets, wheelbarrows, children’s toys, flowerpots and other containers where water can collect. Even small amounts of standing water can provide a place for mosquitoes to breed.
