Demolition of former church in Pittsburgh’s Mount Washington neighborhood expected this week
The former Grandview United Presbyterian Church on Grandview Avenue was destroyed by a fire in July.
PITTSBURGH —
Demolition of an old church building that caught fire last month in Pittsburgh’s Mount Washington neighborhood is expected to begin this week.
An exact date has not been announced for the demolition of the former Grandview United Presbyterian Church on Grandview Avenue.
Two weeks ago, there were concerns about possible asbestos in the remaining structure. On Tuesday, sources told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 reporter Kalea Gunderson that 145 samples from the church were taken to the lab and all were negative.
“Our Department of Permits, Licenses and Inspections was advised by the contractor today that demolition of the church is expected to begin this week,” city spokesperson Molly Onufer told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 on Monday.
The announcement comes over a month after a broke out at the former church on July 7.
