Ukrainians across Erie are marking 35 years of renewed independence, as the local community continues to stand with those affected by Russia’s war against Ukraine.
On Monday, local Ukrainian leaders gathered at Erie City Hall to receive a proclamation recognizing Ukrainian Independence Day and to thank the community for its continued support.
For 35 years, Ukrainians have celebrated their independence. This year’s milestone carries added significance as the war with Russia continues.
Penn State Behrend University professor Dr. Lena Surzhko-Harned reflected on Ukraine’s long journey toward independence after the country declared independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 amid the Soviet Union’s collapse.
For Alina Burlakov, the day was also an opportunity to recognize the strong ties between Ukraine and the United States — and the support Ukrainian families have received from the Erie community.
More than 2,000 Ukrainians now call Erie home.
The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania officially recognizes August 24 as Ukrainian Independence Day, marking the 35th anniversary of the restoration of Ukraine’s independence.
