SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — Members of the Lackawanna County District Attorney’s office and local law enforcement came together to honor the victims of human trafficking and raise awareness.
As part of the Red Sand Project, an organization that advocates for victims of human trafficking, organizers thanked the crowd for their work in the DA’s office and then grabbed pouches and poured red sand in between the gaps of Courthouse Square’s sidewalk. The red sand represents the victims that fall through the cracks.
Lackawanna County Deputy District Attorney Bo Loughney said advocating for human trafficking is especially important now.
“It’s a good time of year to bring advocacy and refocus on this issue,” said Deputy District Attorney Loughney. “A lot of kids go without professional or any member of the team’s eyes on them for the summer months unfortunately. So, with school starting back up, we thought it was good to raise the topic again, raise awareness, and just kind of get it on everyone’s mind.”
The team hopes that when people walk by and see the red sand, they’ll be reminded that human trafficking can happen anywhere, even in Scranton, and to be mindful of things that many often overlook.
