TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WBMA) — Tuscaloosa City Schools students have made gains in English language arts and mathematics over the past several years, according to the district’s latest Alabama Comprehensive Assessment Program results.

The strongest long-term growth was reported at the elementary level.

The school district reported elementary ELA proficiency increased from 42% in 2021 to 65% in 2026, a 23-percentage-point increase. Elementary math proficiency more than doubled over the same period, rising from 21% to 45%.

Middle school students also saw improvement. ELA proficiency increased from 42% in 2021 to 53% in 2026, while math proficiency rose from 15% to 28%.

Overall, TCS students recorded a 54% proficiency rate in ELA in 2026, compared with a statewide rate of 57.1%. In math, TCS had an overall proficiency rate of 35%, slightly above the state average of 34.3%.

Science proficiency in TCS was 39.7%, compared with 47% statewide.

District officials said the results reflect continued efforts to improve classroom instruction and student achievement.

“We know there is more work to do, but this kind of long-term growth shows that our schools are moving in the right direction,” Superintendent Mike Daria said.

District leaders said they plan to build on the recent gains while working to increase proficiency rates across grade levels and subjects.
