Steamtown’s Railfest set to celebrate major anniversaries Labor Day weekend

Steamtown National Historic Site gears up for Railfest, celebrating its 40th anniversary and American railroading’s 200th.

SCRANTON, Pa. — Steamtown National Historic Site is coming off of a busy couple of weeks this summer as around 111,000 people stopped by to see Big Boy 4014. 

Officials hope to continue the park’s big summer with next weekend’s Railfest. The event is Labor Day weekend from 9am-5pm each day. 

Railfest celebrates railroading’s past, present and future with train rides, special demonstrations, programs, visiting equipment, tours and more.  

This year’s event honors Steamtown’s 40th anniversary of becoming a national park site, the 200th anniversary of the start of railroading in the U.S., and America’s 250th. Railfest is free with charges for some rides. There is even a free bus shuttle between Railfest and La Festa Italiana in downtown Scranton.
