ROBESONIA — One big half for Kole Kupper on opening night was plenty to carry Conrad Weiser to a 27-13 victory over visiting Schuylkill Valley Friday in a nonleague game.
Kupper rushed for four touchdowns, all from more than 20 yards out, in the first half to help the Scouts take a big lead they never gave up.
Despite struggling with leg cramps for much of the second half, Kupper finished with 211 yards rushing on 20 carries. Kupper, who also had one reception for 60 yards, had 180 yards rushing by halftime.
“I was coming in here hoping to get two (touchdowns).” said Kupper, a junior. “The four first-half touchdowns just really boosted my confidence.”
Kupper scored on runs of 45 and 21 yards in the first quarter. He reached the end zone from 28 and 34 yards out in the second to stake Conrad Weiser to a 27-7 halftime lead.
Schuylkill Valley quarterback Alex Aletras ran 9 yards for a touchdown late in the first quarter. The Panthers threatened to get back into the game when William Johns ran 24 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter following an errant snap on a Conrad Weiser punt attempt.
But the Conrad Weiser defense held the Panthers without a first down on their final two possessions to seal the victory.
Turning point: Kupper ran 45 yards for a touchdown on Conrad Weiser’s third offensive play and kept running through the Schuylkill Valley defense for the entire first half.
Star of the game: Kupper had 271 yards from scrimmage on 21 offensive touches.
Key statistic: Conrad Weiser, which also got 103 yards on 10 carries from sophomore Kellen Stoy, rushed for 338 yards on 51 attempts..
Up next: Conrad Weiser will be home again on Thursday for a nonleague game against Milton Hershey. Schuylkill Valley will play its home opener on Friday against Octorara.
