The Pennsylvania Game Commission alongside Ducks Unlimited came together to celebrate the dedication of restored wetland at State Game Lands 151 in Mercer County.
The land was an abandoned fish farm. Federal and state grants allowed the land to be acquired and transformed.
“Through really strong partnerships, collaboration with numerous entities, great relationships with the Pennsylvania Game Commission, we were able to sort of transform it from an abandoned aquaculture operation to a highly functioning waterfowl unit,” Said Ducks Unlimited Regional Biologist Lisa Clark.
PA State Game Land Restoration
The restoration is a collaborative investment that has been in motion since 2019, and Land Management Supervisor Ethan Beale entered his position and 2023. Beale emphasized that despite the physical restoration being completed, conservation efforts are just beginning.
“I hope that this isn’t viewed as like the projects done, because this isn’t, you know, with conservation and habitat management, that’s never done. And if anything, from my perspective, it’s actually just starting even more than it was three years ago,” Beale Said.
The project is part of a broader effort to provide lasting benefits for wildlife, water quality, and outdoor recreation, including hunting, wildlife viewing, and other opportunities on Pennsylvania’s public lands.
The location of State Game Lands 151 is proximal to Lake Erie and the Pymatuning Reservoir, making it a pivotal spot for migrating waterfowl.
“This region in Northwest PA, just not from Pennsylvania perspective, but internationally is really significant to birds in the Atlantic flyway, and so this project here is just a really great testament to being able to deliver really great restoration and habitat,” Clark Said.
