Pennsylvania rep. to introduce bill recognizing Sept. 25 as ‘Dolly Parton Day’

A Pennsylvania representative is planning to introduce a piece of legislation that would honor famed country singer Dolly Parton.

Rep. Ben Waxman, D-Philadelphia, announced in a memorandum that he plans to introduce legislation to recognize Sept. 25 as “Dolly Parton Day” in Pennsylvania.
“Dolly Parton was a singer, songwriter, and philanthropist whose music is well known for its powerful storytelling. She was the first in her family to graduate high school and used her personal experiences and empathy for others to write songs that continue to connect with many,” Waxman said in the memorandum. “Some of her most famous works became anthems for equality and acceptance, including ‘Coat of Many Colors,’ ‘Family,’ and ‘9-to-5’.”
Waxman continued, “In addition, Dolly Parton used the money she earned during her career to help others. Due to the creation of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, thousands of children across Pennsylvania and the nation have access to a new book every month at no cost to their families. And through her donation of one million dollars to Vanderbilt University to develop the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, her philanthropy helped save lives.”
The representative said he plans to introduce the resolution to recognize Parton in honor of what she stood for.
Parton died peacefully Tuesday in Nashville, Tennessee. She was 80 years old.
