OBITUARY
John F. Capalongo Jr., 80, of West Scranton, passed away Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at Geisinger Community Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his longtime partner, Linda Ruth Rogers, who passed away on April 24, 2022.
Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late John and Rose Montella Capalongo. John attended West Scranton High School and was a local business owner for more than 60 years through Capalongo Refuse Company.
John was a talented and hardworking man who could do just about anything. He was always willing to lend a hand, whether someone was working on a home, a vehicle, or simply needed help with a project. If something needed to be fixed, built, or figured out, John was often the person people turned to. He took great pride in his work and in helping others.
John was also an avid car enthusiast. He loved antique cars and especially enjoyed participating in antique car shows. Some of his happiest moments were spent sharing that passion with his family.
Surviving are his daughter, Dina Capalongo, Media; his son, Dino Capalongo and wife, Tracy, Scranton; grandchildren, Alexandra Wilson, Media; and Cloe, Cabre, Camia, and Dinello Capalongo, Scranton; brothers, Anthony and wife, Lorraine, Scranton, and Frank and wife, Sharon, Taylor; and sister, Donna Witiak and husband, Daniel, Old Forge; and nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Among the many cherished memories John leaves behind are the times his grandchildren spent riding along with him to car shows. Those simple trips became treasured memories that will remain with them forever. But what stood out most was the immense pride and love John had for each of his grandchildren.
He celebrated their victories, encouraged them through their challenges, and supported every effort they made. He was genuinely happy for their accomplishments and always found a way to let each of them know how proud he was. Most importantly, each of his grandchildren knew they were special to him and deeply loved.
John’s absence will leave a tremendous void in the lives of those who loved him. But that void will be filled, in part, by the countless memories he created throughout his life; his words of wisdom, his stories, his laughter, his helping hand, and the countless special moments, both big and small, that made him who he was.
His greatest legacy will not be measured in accomplishments or years in business, but in the people he loved, the lives he touched, and the memories he leaves behind.
Thank you, Dad and Grandpa. Thank you for everything you taught us, for every helping hand, every word of advice, and every special moment. We will miss you more than words can say. We will carry your memory with us always, and we will love you forever.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday 11 am from the Solfanelli-Fiorillo Funeral Home Inc., 1030 N. Main Ave., Scranton. Entombment Cathedral Cemetery Mausoleum. Family and friends may pay their respects Tuesday from 9-11 am in the funeral home.
John loved animals and had many pets, including Diesel, his loyal pug. He always donated to animal advocacy groups and we invite you to consider making a charitable donation in his memory to an animal rescue, shelter or organization of your choice.
