PPS temporarily shifting 35 buildings to synchronous remote learning ahead of extreme heat
PITTSBURGH —
Pittsburgh Public Schools announced it will be temporarily shifting 35 of its buildings to remote learning this week due to extreme heat.

In a release on Sunday, the district said students within the impacted buildings will learn remotely from Tuesday, Sept. 1 through Thursday, Sept. 3 due to expected high temperatures.
“Current weather forecasts are calling for temperatures in the 90s next week, prompting PPS to implement its Extreme Heat Protocol at schools identified as most impacted by the forecasted conditions,” the release said.
The release continued, saying, “Under the District’s protocol, when the National Weather Service forecasts outside temperatures to reach or exceed 85°F and/or a heat index of 90°F or higher, PPS monitors temperatures inside school facilities. When temperatures inside instructional spaces reach 90°F or higher, the District evaluates whether a temporary shift to remote learning or other measures are necessary.”
