SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA CO. (WOLF) — West Nile virus has been detected in two more mosquito samples in Lackawanna County, marking the eighth detection in the county this summer.
County officials said the mosquitoes were collected August 17 at two locations: East Corey Street at Walsh Court in Scranton and the 300 block of Spring Street in Moosic.
Lackawanna County was notified of the positive test results on August 24.
Despite the repeated detections in mosquitoes, officials said no human cases of West Nile virus have been reported in Lackawanna County this year.
County officials and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection are continuing to monitor mosquito activity.
Residents are being encouraged to reduce potential mosquito breeding areas around their homes by getting rid of standing water. Officials recommend changing the water in birdbaths at least once a week and keeping swimming pools properly cleaned and chlorinated.
