Once again, a member of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders garnered an International League weekly award.
Righthander Alexander Cornielle was named IL Pitcher of the Week for the period of Aug. 24-30. He was honored for his shutout performance Friday night at Worcester, going eight innings — a season-high for a RailRiders pitcher — and allowed just two hits with two walks and six strikeouts in a 2-0 win. It was the team’s ninth shutout of the season.
Since coming off the 60-day injured list and joining the RailRiders in June, Cornielle is 4-3 in 12 starts with a 2.83 earned-run average and 53 strikeouts in 54 innings. However, in August, he was 2-1 in four starts with a 1.57 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 23 innings.
Cornielle joins Brendan Beck as RailRiders to be named IL Pitcher of the Week this season; Beck won the award three times (May 11-17, June 1-8, July 20-26) and also was chosen IL Pitcher of the Month for June. Yanquiel Fernandez (May 18-24) and Tyler Hardman (July 6-12) were selected IL Player of the Week this season.
The RailRiders are home at PNC Field this week for a seven-game series against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. They are scheduled to play a doubleheader Tuesday beginning at 4:05 p.m.
