Stroudsburg’s mayor has placed the borough under a state of emergency and issued a curfew following a car takeover over the weekend.
Mayor Ellen Currie posted on social media that the curfew follows “disgraceful behavior” Saturday night.
Currie, in her declaration, said a “substantial” number of people and vehicles gathered on Main Street, including between Fifth and Ninth streets. People and vehicles obstructed traffic and created a “substantial danger” to other drivers, people and property, the declaration said.
Videos of the incident circulating on social media show crowds of people lining Main Street as cars do burnouts and backfire. In one video, several people stand in the street taking video as a Corvette does high-speed doughnuts just feet away.
The curfew, which began Sunday, lasts until Friday but could be extended beyond that. No one can congregate between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. on the road or public sidewalks on Main Street between Fifth and Ninth streets.
Normal vehicle and pedestrian traffic is still allowed during that time.
Currie said she is working with the Monroe County district attorney’s office, Stroud Area Regional Police and borough council following the takeover.
