The Pittsburgh Steelers filled out their practice squad Wednesday by signing Gar-Field graduate Bishop Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald signed with the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted rookie free agent after the 2026 NFL Draft. The Titans released the safety Sunday and did not bring him back on their practice squad.
By signing with Pittsburgh, Fitzgerald gives the Steelers the maximum 17 players NFL teams can have on their practice squads.
Fitzgerald was a consensus all-American last season at the University of Southern California, where he led the Big Ten with five interceptions. That total ranked second nationally.
Fitzgerald began his college career at Coffeyville Community College in Kansas. He played two seasons there before transferring to N.C. State, where he played two more seasons.
Fitzgerald took over as Gar-Field’s starting quarterback his sophomore season and threw for 1,445 yards and seven touchdowns as the Red Wolves improved to 3-7. He also served as a return specialist and as the punter, where he earned second-team all-district honors.
By his junior season, Gar-Field went 7-4 and made the playoffs for the first time since 2011. He was second-team all-district after throwing for 1,512 yards and 14 touchdowns.
Fitzgerald had an even better season as a senior when Gar-Field went 6-1 and captured its first district title since 1994.
Despite playing four fewer regular-season games due to the pandemic, he finished as Prince William County’s top passer, throwing for 1,485 yards with 16 touchdowns and just five interceptions in seven games, and was named the Cardinal District Offensive Player of the Year.
