Mercy Center for Women is moving forward with the next phase of its Mercy Anchor Community Center West (MACC West) project, marking a significant step in expanding housing opportunities for individuals experiencing homelessness in Erie.
The organization recently broke ground on Phase Two of the development, which will transform the former Sacred Heart School building in East Erie into 20 apartment units designed to provide stable, supportive housing for those in need.
According to Mercy Center for Women Executive Director Jennie Hagerty, the demand for affordable housing and support services continues to grow throughout the community.
The housing initiative builds on the success of the Mercy Anchor Community Center, which opened debt-free in 2023. The center has become a cornerstone of support in East Erie, providing programs and services aimed at helping individuals and families achieve long-term stability.
Phase Two represents another major milestone in Mercy Center for Women’s broader vision of creating a comprehensive community hub that combines housing, support services, and opportunities for personal growth.
Fundraising efforts for the project continue as the organization works toward its goal of raising $7.6 million. Leaders say they are steadily inching closer to that target and remain optimistic about securing the remaining funding needed to complete the development.
Once finished, the 20 new apartments will offer safe and affordable housing for people experiencing homelessness, helping address one of Erie’s most pressing community challenges while strengthening the organization’s mission of supporting vulnerable populations.
