BELLEFONTE, Pa. – Former Penn State football assistant coach Jerry Sandusky is looking to cancel the hearing scheduled for next Tuesday, where one of his accusers was expected to withdraw his sexual assault accusations against him.
Sandusky played at Penn State in the ’60s, and coached with the Nittany Lions from 1969 to 1999.
In 2011, authorities arrested Sandusky and accused him of sexually abusing young boys for years. He was convicted in 2012 on 45 of the 48 counts filed against him.
Sandusky began serving a 30-to-60-year prison term in the fall of 2012.
In late August, Sandusky’s legal team announced that one of the men who originally testified against him would be coming forward to withdraw his accusations in court in September.
That evidentiary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 8, at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte.
On Thursday, a spokesperson and investigator representing Sandusky said that the former coach has instructed his attorneys to withdraw him from the upcoming hearing, as he intends to take his appeal to federal court.
Pennsylvania court officials say that, as of right now, the proceeding is still scheduled for Tuesday, but a status conference is scheduled for Friday to discuss this recent motion.
