SCRANTON, Pa. — Where customers used to come in is now locked up after Isla Paraiso restaurant in Scranton was shut down by order of the Lackawanna District Attorney’s office on Tuesday over early morning noise complaints, fights, and other violence outside the restaurant.

“You’re disrupting the neighborhood, we’re going to take it seriously, we’re going to make sure we shut you down, that’s what today is all about” says Lackawanna District Attorney Brian Gallagher.

The DA’s office says the restaurant seems like a reputable business during the day, but there have been dozens of calls for police to the location as its nightclub hours spill into the streets. A single shot was fired outside the business early Sunday morning, and while nobody was hurt, the DA’s office says it’s part of a worrying trend.

District attorney Brian Gallagher says they welcome anyone who wants to run a business, but they must do so without disrupting the community.

“If you want to come here in Lackawanna County and start a business, we have neighbors and friends, and everybody welcomes you and will support you,” says Gallagher.

It’s the commotion in the early morning that caused a judge to sign on the order to close the business.

“But once you take advantage of the neighborhood, once you go over that line, where there’s drugs, alcohol and gunshots, we’re not going to tolerate it; go somewhere else,” remarks Gallagher.

The closing comes as a shock to some customers who frequent the spot. Evan Grandoit gets lunch at the restaurant most days…  He says it’s a surprise to see them shut down.

“I know they have a nightclub, I don’t come at night I just come for the food during the day, I don’t see any problems, I don’t have any problems myself” says Grandoit.

With doors currently shut, the DA’s office says they want to keep the business closed to cut off the disruptions in the early morning.

“The people in there working right now seem like very nice people, but it’s really what happens from 10 pm to 4 am, not what happens right now,” says Gallagher.

A hearing will be held Thursday at the Lackawanna County Courthouse to determine whether the Isla Paraiso Restaurant will be considered a nuisance establishment. The restaurant will be shut down permanently until that decision is made.
