As cleanup efforts continue across Erie following Wednesday night’s severe storms, crews and neighbors are working to get city streets and public areas back in use.
Over at Bayview Park, the community formed teams that worked to cut and remove branches and help clean up the mess those storms made.
“If we all lift something, you know, we can get to the people that are in more critical situations faster,” said Abdullah Washington, a concerned citizen. “We always tell ourselves if something bad happens, it’s every man for themself, you know, but we see that’s not true, especially not in Erie here.”
Democratic Congressional Candidate Justin Wagner also broke out his chainsaw and joined the team effort to clean up around Erie.
‘They care about you’: Erie community comes together to clear storm damage
Beyond cleanup, many places in the city are still offering support for those affected by the heavy storm damage.
With crews still working hard to restore power in the city of Erie Saturday, local businesses like Herb and Honey Bakery are offering a place to cool off, charge devices and find a sense of community in the chaos.
“It wasn’t even a thought. It was just, of course. We have electricity, we always want to be a community space that people feel welcome in,” said Jessica Schultz, owner of Herb and Honey Bakery. “This is my neighborhood. I live here, our power went out in this building for just a few minutes overnight, like this could have been us.”
Erie organizations, businesses rally together to help those impacted by storm
Between lending a helping hand and offering support and services to those in need at this time, the Erie community continues to show up for one another.
“It tells you something about how people think of you, when they think of you when they need help, and so we’re just trying to be here for everybody, and sometimes it’s good to know you’re not the only one who cares about your neighborhood or your city,” Washington said.
“I think there’s a lot of grassroots efforts that are slowly but strongly building in Erie, recognizing that the strength will come from your community members, the relief will come from your community members,” Schultz said.
Efforts are expected to continue throughout the weekend as the city works to clear Erie’s side streets.
