Union members and supporters made their way through Erie, celebrating generations of workers who fought for better wages, benefits and working conditions.
Those taking part said Labor Day also provides an opportunity to look at where the labor movement stands today and what workers need going forward.

“Yeah, this is not a day off; it’s a celebration of all the hard work that working men and women have done in this country and the fight that organized labor did to ensure that we have a 40-hour workweek and a couple of days off to enjoy with our family and friends,” Jim Wertz, an APSCUF member, said.
Those in the parade said unions remain an important voice for employees, particularly as families continue dealing with rising costs and change in the workforce.
“Union membership needs to be something that’s pushed a lot more as a path for people to get into the trades. You know I think a lot of students need to be aware that there’s this other path in trades and working with your hands and building things.” Justin Wagner, who is running for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 16th district, said.
“Unions are all about families and supporting communities, right? So, everything that they’re doing, they’re giving back. Those workers live in this community. They are giving back to this community.” Chris Drexel, Erie County District 5 representative, said.

The parade brings people down for some fun, but it also gives people a chance to be educated and learn about unions and workers.
“How important organized labor is in the workplace and in our lives and the role organized labor has played in ensuring that working people everywhere are being taken care of with dignity and respect,” Wertz said.
Participants say even after the parade ends, the focus remains on protecting workers and keeping labor issues part of the conversation.
