Mellonated Festival promotes safe space for youth at Pittsburgh’s Mellon Park
PITTSBURGH —
The third annual Mellonated Festival took place at Pittsburgh’s Mellon Park on Monday.
The event is intended to provide a safe environment for young people to come together, with live music, food vendors and a celebrity basketball game.
“It’s a ‘stop the violence’ event. There’s a lot of kids out here. We’re doing it because we want to put on for the kids to have a space to go to, and interact with each other with a safe environment that allows them to be kids and run around and meet other kids,” organizer Malcolm Muhammad said.

The festival was made possible by Allegheny County’s Main Streets Allegheny initiative.
“Pittsburgh’s been necessarily not the best place for the kids to go out and have fun. Like, they’re stopping downtown. So I wanted to have an event that was mainly just for the kids,” Muhammad said.
