When Scranton Prep and Abington Heights girls tennis teams clash, the battles are so intense and entertaining that they will get to do it twice this fall.

The two programs that dominate the Lackawanna League and District 2 meet for the first of two matches Wednesday at the Abington Heights Middle School tennis courts.

Due to a change in the league structure and a split into two divisions, the second match between the Lady Comets and Classics is set for Sept. 25.

Scranton Prep has won four straight Lackawanna League and District 2 Class 2A titles and starts this week with 62 straight league wins. The Classics have also won two of the last three PIAA Class 2A championships.

Abington Heights has won the last eight consecutive District 2 Class 3A team championships.

Scranton Prep is off to another impressive start to the season. The Classics have won their first three Lackawanna League matches by shutout. They also defeated New York teams Seton Catholic and Vestal in nonleague battles last weekend.

Lily Lengyel, the Classics’ No. 1 singles player, is 5-0 overall. She is 73-9 in her career heading into this week’s matches. She captured a PIAA Class 2A gold medal last season in doubles with her partner Emma Cuck, who graduated.

Scranton Prep’s Adithi Velaga is playing at No. 2 singles and is 3-0 in the league. Hannah LaCoe, a Lackawanna League all-star last season, is also 3-0 in the league.

Abington Heights (6-0) has used several different singles lineups. All combinations have been successful with Amishi Amit at 6-0, freshman Addie Stark at 5-0, Katherine Arp at 5-0, and Sammy Rosenstein at 2-0.

Abington Heights is also leading the District 2 Class 3A power rating standings. West Scranton (4-1) and Honesdale (4-1) are challenging in second and third place. However, neither plays the Lady Comets because they are members of the new Lackawanna League Division II.

Montrose leading

Montrose, with its strong singles lineup, is leading the Lackawanna Division II title chase.

The Lady Meteors are unbeaten in four matches. Cara Evans, the defending PIAA Class 2A singles champion, is 4-0, running her career record to 64-3. Her sister, Anna Evans, is undefeated at No. 2 singles and is 21-3 in two seasons.

Erin Tillotson is 3-0 at No. 3 singles for the Lady Meteors.

Montrose already has a shutout win over second-place West Scranton. The Lady Meteors have a busy week with four matches. They are home against Scranton on Tuesday, then play on the road at Western Wayne on Wednesday, at Riverside on Thursday, and at Honesdale on Friday.

West Scranton (4-1) won the first of two matches against Honesdale (3-1), 3-2, earlier this season. The Lady Invaders continue to have success under the guidance of coach Devinne Scott, who improved her career record to 83-36 in eight seasons.

Good starts

• Wallenpaupack climbed back into the District 2 Class 2A playoff picture, recovering from a 0-3 start. In fairness, the Lady Buckhorns lost a doubleheader to Abington Heights, 3-2 and 3-2, on Aug. 26. They bounced back with wins over North Pocono, 5-0, and Valley View, 4-1.

Wallenpaupack (2-3) and Holy Cross (2-2) are the only Class 2A teams competing in the Lackawanna League Division I. In addition to its two matchups against Abington Heights, Wallenpaupack also has nonleague clashes with West Scranton and Montrose later in the season. Holy Cross plays Scranton Prep on Tuesday and is at Wallenpaupack on Wednesday.

• Mid Valley’s Regan Buranich, the team’s No. 1 singles player, improved to 4-1 this season.

Last season, Buranich finished 4-10 in the Lackawanna League and was 2-4 in 2024. Buranich beat Scranton and Western Wayne to lead the Spartanettes to coach Brian Lennon’s first two career wins.

• Valley View’s Coral Kelly improved to 3-2 overall at No. 1 singles with a hard-fought, three-set win over Wallenpaupack’s Olivia Kogan, 5-7, 6-4, 10-6. Kelly also defeated Holy Cross’ Madyson Mace and has a nonleague win over Riverside’s Sadie Fanning.

District 2 schedule

The 2026 season is still young, but the District 2 tennis committee chairs John Coyle and Mike Ognosky released the dates and locations for the championship tournaments.

The team championships start with any necessary first-round matches Sept. 30. The quarterfinals are Oct. 2 at the site of the higher-seeded team. The semifinals and finals are Oct. 5 at Kirby Park. The Class 3A semifinals start at 11 a.m., and the Class 2A at 12:30 p.m. Finals follow.

The District 2 seeding meeting is Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. at Dunmore High School.

The singles championships start Oct. 8. The Class 2A first three rounds are at Kirby Park, while the Class 3A tournament will be held at North Pocono High School due to construction at Wilkes University. The semifinals and finals are Oct. 9, starting at 1 p.m. at Kirby Park.

The doubles tournament will start Oct. 13, again with the first three rounds in Class 2A at Kirby Park and the Class 3A matches at North Pocono. The semifinals and finals will be Oct. 14, starting at 1 p.m. at Kirby Park.
