An investigation is underway after a teenager was shot and killed in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, late Tuesday night.

On Sept. 8, around 10:30 p.m., a Lansdowne police officer was in the area of North Wycombe and Blackburn avenues when he spotted two men standing near a vehicle. The officer then heard multiple gunshots and spotted a vehicle leaving the area.

The vehicle traveled about a half a block before crashing and the two men the officer had initially spotted fled on foot into a nearby apartment building, investigators said.

Responding police officers found an 18-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds inside the crashed vehicle. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

Other officers responded to the apartment complex and searched through the building. Officials said two people were located and detained for questioning though no charges have been filed at this time.

The 18-year-old victim is a Lansdowne resident. Officials have not released his name pending the notification of family members and the completion of the investigation.

“This is a terrible tragedy,” Lansdowne Police Chief Kennth C. Rutherford Jr. wrote. A young man lost his life in our community, and my thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time. There is no taking back the loss of a young life, and our department will work diligently to determine what happened and hold those responsible accountable.”
