A 20-year-old Scranton man who died Monday evening succumbed to injuries from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a police chase through Lackawanna County, Coroner Tim Rowland announced Wednesday.
The coroner determined Christian Santiago didn’t incur any other injuries resulting from external gunfire during the incident.
State police pursued Santiago from Susquehanna County to Scranton after he stole a rifle from a relative’s home earlier in the day and his family obtained an involuntary mental health commitment warrant.
The pursuit ended near the beginning of the McDade Expressway after troopers attempted to spin out Santiago’s vehicle.
Police said Santiago showed a rifle from the driver’s-side window and failed to comply with commands. Police shot at the vehicle after hearing a gunshot.
After the gunfire, Santiago was removed from the vehicle and taken to Geisinger Community Medical Center, where he died, state police said.
