PENNSYLVANIA (WTAJ) — Geography lesson plans may continue to change if another Great Lake is renamed this year.
“Pennsylvania has only one Great Lake. Maybe it is time we put our name on it,” said Rep. David Maloney Sr. (R-Berks) in a memo circulated to all House members Sept. 9.
The representative says he plans to introduce a resolution urging federal officials, including the President, Congress, and the United States Secretary of the Interior, to take the steps necessary to rename Lake Erie as “Lake Pennsylvania.”

The representative cites the reason for the proposed name change as a matter of modern identity.
“Every summer, Pennsylvanians head toward the lake—north on I-79 from western Pennsylvania, west on I-80 from central and eastern Pennsylvania, and along connecting highways from every corner of the Commonwealth—with boats, fishing gear and families in tow,” said Maloney Sr. “They spend the weekend on Pennsylvania’s Great Lake shoreline and return home Sunday to communities across the Commonwealth.”
