The Erie Cancer Wellness Center is expanding to better serve the growing number of people impacted by cancer in the Erie area and beyond.
The center announced plans for its new space Wednesday evening during its “Courage to Grow” fundraising event at the Erie Yacht Club.
The expansion will allow the center to offer additional programming and resources for people navigating a cancer diagnosis and their families.
The new space will include two exercise and movement areas, a new strength-training room, lounge areas designed to support mental well-being and connection, green space, and a larger wig salon.
Erie Cancer Wellness Center Executive Director Jackie Wassel says the center’s work is centered around meeting people where they are throughout their cancer journey.
“It’s a gift for us to witness their bravery and courage and to really hear their individual stories because there’s no cancer journey alike. So, we get the beautiful opportunity to meet them where they are, but also help them to get where they need to go.”
The center currently sees about 40 new people each month and served more than 500 cancer patients last year alone.
Officials say those numbers demonstrate the continued need for non-medical cancer support services in the Erie community.
The expansion is intended to provide more space and resources as the Erie Cancer Wellness Center works to reach more people affected by cancer.
