A Shillington student got an opportunity to take part in a historic event Wednesday.

Kuljeet Sangha, 17, a Gov. Mifflin High School senior, was selected by state Rep. Manny Guzman to serve as the 127th Legislative District’s youth delegate for a special House of Representatives session at Congress Hall in Philadelphia.

The session, held at the historic site where the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights were debated, commemorates the 250th anniversaries of the Declaration of Independence and the Pennsylvania Constitution. During the session, lawmakers voted on resolutions commemorating the anniversaries.

Sangha joined more than 80 students from across Pennsylvania through a civic education initiative held in partnership with America250PA, giving students firsthand experience with state government and democracy while exploring Pennsylvania’s founding history.

“Kuljeet is a true example of the dedication and leadership we hope to see in the next generation,” Guzman said in a statement announcing the event. “His dedication to his school and community, combined with his ambition for the future, made him the ideal choice to represent our district at this historic session.”

Sangha serves as class president, a leader of the National Honor Society and student school board representative at Gov. Mifflin.

He said it was an incredible honor to represent his community at Congress Hall and learn firsthand how state government works.

“This experience has deepened my appreciation for Pennsylvania’s role in shaping our nation’s history, and I’m grateful to Rep. Guzman for this opportunity,” Sangha said in Guzman’s announcement of the honor.

Sangha said he plans to study mechanical engineering and business — hopefully at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

“I have no doubt that great things are ahead for Kuljeet, and I look forward to seeing all that he accomplishes,” Guzman said.
