Upper Darby Township has identified the victim of Saturday’s shooting in Philadelphia, which claimed the life of a township teen.

In a press release, Mayor Ed Brown said Zahkir Whitfield was the victim. He was sophomore at Upper Darby High School when he was shot and killed on a SEPTA bus after an altercation in the back of the bus.

The shooting occurred at 1 p.m. on the Route 15 trolley running as a bus route near 40th Street and Girard Avenue.

Brown called the shooting an all-too common pattern of violence and extended his heartfelt condolences and prayers to Zahkir’s family, friends and classmates.

Brown urged anyone with information related to this incident to come forward and help “bring justice for Zahkir and his family.”

“Let us come together as a community to honor Zahkir’s memory, support one another, and take real action toward peace and safety for all our children,” Brown said.

Edward Marshaleck, the district’s assistant superintendent of student services, said the district had resources available in schools on Monday “for our staff and students who may need to speak with someone from our pupil services team.”
