West Scranton has opened the new season with two straight wins for the first time in 10 years.
Quincy Mosley, West Scranton Senior says, “You know, it’s great, you know, to be all one, one team. And we all understand the goal that we want to achieve this year. And no one’s really used to it yet, but we’re just going to keep striving for greatness. “
Kazual Colbert,West Scranton Junior added, “You know, it’s just, you know, it’s unbelievable feeling. You know, these past couple years, we didn’t get what we want. But, you know, this year we’re going to go get it.
Ide asks, What’s different. Maybe is something different. A mentality. What’s going on here ?
Colbert answers, “ You know all year since the last game last year, we just been locked in like we’ve just been locked in a lot. You know, I think the younger guys, you know, they’re understanding it a lot more. And yeah, we’re just like locked in as a team. “
It’s been a combination of experience and talent for the Invaders. With a Freshman quarterback, Austin Sostre, the offense is averaging 31 points per game while the defense has only given up 17 total yards passing.
Jake Manetti, West Scranton coach says, “ For us right now, we’re just trying to distribute the ball the best we can. You know, we have a lot of playmakers, guys with veteran experience, guys that have been there before.
So we’re just trying to trying to utilize them the best of our abilities. You know kind of not key on any guys defensively. You know it kind of puts them in a bind having to cover the whole field. You have a multitude of guys that can hurt you at one time. So you know we’re just trying to spread the field and distribute the football. “
Wyoming Valley West has won only five games over the last five seasons and gone through several coaches. But this year there’s a different feel and a different commitment level to the Spartans.
Brydon Rukstalis, Wyoming Valley West coach says, “ I think the kids are very bought in. We doubled our numbers from last year and we’ve had kids from multi-sports.
You know, if they’re basketball players coming in to lift after basketball practice. Same thing with track. So the kid’s been really committed. And you know, they brought the energy back to the program. “
Tanner Ragukas, Wyoming Valley West Senior added., “ I think the execution there’s there’s flashes of it. There’s flashes of great things and then there’s too many negative after the positive. And I think that’s what’s killing us.
That’s what’s keeping us out of these games. And, you know, against Williamsport we had a great first half, I think we came out and we executed. And it was just we came out in the second half. They adjusted. We didn’t adjust enough. And it just it showed. And I think this week we really have a chance to execute and do what we could do all week. “
If the Spartans do that they will need their play makers to shine and the line has to play tough.
Rukstalis says, “ I see just be a little bit more physical, especially up front. Dallas kind of pushed us around a little bit last week and that was something we went in gameplay wise is, you know, we have to be more physical than that team. And I think this week is, you know, the same motivation. You know, we got to move the ball on offense and it starts with our O-line. “
Damien Eastman, Wyoming Valley West Junior added, “ I think we showed out as a team, showed what we got on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball, showing sparks here and there. And once we can turn those sparks in a consistent drives and consistent stops on defense, we’re going to be a very successful team in the future, “
