Here’s a list of Sept. 11 remembrance ceremonies planned in NEPA.
Lackawanna County
Scranton: The City of Scranton and Scranton Fire Department will host a flag-raising ceremony honoring the contributions of a local Eagle Scout. on Friday, Sept. 11, at noon, at the Scranton Fire Department Station 4, 1047 N. Main Ave., Scranton.Eagle Scout Andrew John “Jack” Polansky Jr., of Scranton, raised funds online this summer through the online fundraising platform GoFundMe and sold T-shirts to support his Eagle Scout project with Scouting America Troop 50. Jack Polansky Jr. is the son of Scranton Fire Capt. Andy Polansky, who is entering his 25th year with the Scranton Fire Department. Jack is a senior at Holy Cross High School in Dunmore and a lifeguard at the Dunmore YMCA.On his GoFundMe page, Jack wrote that he intended to install the new flagpole in time for September 11 to create a meaningful tribute for the SFD and the community.
Scranton: The Ancient Order of Hibernians Paul “Hook” O’Malley Division Four will be conducting a 911 memorial service on Sept. 11, at 5 p.m. at the Cathedral Cemetery, located at 1708 Oram St. The service will take place at the Celtic cross.
Clarks Summit: On Friday, Sept. 11, Clarks Summit will commemorate the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks with a dedication ceremony honoring Laura Lee DeFazio Morabito. The ceremony will take place at 9 a.m. at the Finish Shop Pocket Park on Depot Street. Family members, Abington Heights Choral students, local first responders, and Borough Council members will be in attendance to pay tribute and reflect on this significant anniversary. Members of the public are warmly invited to join the observance and participate in honoring Laura Lee DeFazio Morabito’s memory and legacy.
Luzerne County
Hazleton: The public and first responders are invited to a mass and ceremony of remembrance 6 p.m. Sept. 9 at St. Gabriel’s R.C. Church. Afterward, firefighters will process outdoors for a ceremony with the marching band of Hazleton Area High School, a rifle salute and remarks by Fire Chief Donald Leshko and Mayor Jeff Cusat.
Nanticoke: The community is invited to attend a special Sept. 11 remembrance ceremony 10 a.m. Sept. 11 at the Luzerne County Community College’s Walk of Honor on the college’s Nanticoke campus.
Wilkes-Barre: Luzerne County will hold a remembrance ceremony 8:30 a.m. Sept. 11 in the rotunda of the Luzerne County Courthouse.
Wilkes-Barre: King’s College will host a community gathering 10 a.m. to noon Sept. 11 at Monarch Court to remember members of the King’s community whose lives were lost. At 12:05 p.m. a remembrance mass will be held in the Chapel of Christ the King. At 7 p.m., the King’s football team will host first responders night, recognizing first responders before the game and a moment of silence will honor the lives lost on Sept. 11.
Schuylkill County
Tower City: The Tower City American Legion Riders will host a 25th Anniversary 9/11 Remembrance Ride on Sept. 11 across the local area alongside local police, fire departments and first responders. The procession will visit four area schools to teach students about service and sacrifice before returning to the Tower City American Legion at 2 Clarks Valley Road for a public ceremony at 2 p.m. featuring guest speakers.
