Quantum Theatre names next artistic director as founder prepares to retire

The Quantum Theatre named a new artistic director, Katie Brook, as outgoing director and founder Karla Boos is preparing to retire.

Brook is an alumni of Carnegie Mellon University’s School of Drama, earning an MFA in directing in 2012. In 2022, she directed “The Cherry Orchard” for Quantum, which Boos starred in. She was also in the process of directing “Radio Island” for the Lawrenceville-based experimental theatre, which will premier in October and predates her selection as artistic director.

“For me, being an artistic director means setting a vision and creating the conditions for great artists to do their best work,” Brook said in a prepared statement. “I want to build creative teams, support bold projects and develop work that keeps Quantum relevant and essential to Pittsburgh and beyond. I believe in trusting the people I work with, empowering them to make decisions and giving them the space to bring their own creative ideas to life.”
