SCRANTON — Five Wyoming Valley Conference varsity runners earned trophies Saturday in the 32nd annual Lackawanna County Commissioners Cross Country Invitational.

The top 25 finishers in each of four races, including junior high, at McDade Park were recognized.

Nanticoke’s David Houssock led the way with a fourth-place finish and Hanover Area’s Joseph Bly was ninth out of 132 boys finishers from 18 schools.

Pittston Area’s Quinnie Jones and Alexis Noone made the top 25 in the girls race along with Hanover Area’s Ayla Schappert.

Riverside won the boys title while Abington Heights took the girls championship and finished second in boys.

Jack Davies won the boys race in 16:41.56 to lead four Riverside finishers in the top seven.

Joseph Grad of Abington Heights was a little under 15 seconds back.

Riverside outscored Abington heights 29-48.

Hanover Area was sixth with 206 points. Pittston Area posted a 255 for 10th among the 12 schools that had at least the five finishers needed for a team score.

Houssock finished in 17:04.02. Bly’s time was 17:16.76.

Jack Scagliotti led Pittston Area, taking 40th.

Brayden Gaylord was 96th for Wyoming Area, which like Nanticoke, entered individuals, but not a full team.

Abington Heights defeated Scranton Prep 57-83 for the girls title.

The individual race ended in the opposite order with Vella Byrne from Scranton Prep winning in 19:18.10. Marley Gilboy from Abington Heights was second in 19:35.31.

Jones and Noone, both freshmen, were 13th and 20th. They helped Pittston Area finish seventh with 156 points.

Schappert was 21st. Hanover Area was last of nine teams with 181.

Wyoming Area did not have a full team. Addison Gaylord was 64th in the 93-runner field.

High Point Classical Academy Middle School in Larksville had two junior high medalists – Jon Tarr seventh in the boys race and Kate Kraal 11th among girls.

Pittston Area’s Ella Anthony was 11th of 100 in the junior high girls race.

BOYS SOCCER

Wyoming Area 7, MMI Prep 1

Ben Rogish came through with three goals and Austin Price added a pair for the Warriors. Caden Reeves and Hanza Nawaz rounded out the scoring.

The Preppers got a goal from Jeremiah Aquino.

Wyoming Seminary 4, Lake-Lehman 0

Wyoming Seminary scored three times in the second half to pull away for the victory. Caden Hoban scored twice in a six-minute span for the Blue Knights in the second half. Liubomyr Vasylynka finished off the scoring with a penalty kick.

Justuce Schanberg had Seminary’s first goal off an assist by George Rolland. Rolland also assisted Hoban’s first goal while Vasylynka assisted the second.

FIELD HOCKEY

Wyoming Seminary 6, Pittston Area 0

Wyoming Seminary finished off a game suspended Sept. 1 because of thunderstorms, defeating Pittston Area.

Senior Ella Plummer led the Blue Knights with three goals. Anna Rolland and Apollonia Bruno each recorded a goal and an assist, while Emma Ey contributed an unassisted goal and three assists. Ava Sanders also added an assist.

Lola Sorino scored Pittston Area’s goal on a penalty stroke with 7:10 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Goalkeepers Emilee Fiske and Elizabeth VanKuyk split time in the cage, combining for three saves on four shots on goal.
