JEFFERSON COUNTY, Pa (WJAC) — A 40-year-old woman has died from measles-related complications in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, marking the county’s first confirmed death linked to the highly contagious disease, officials said.

Jefferson County Coroner Greg Furlong said the woman died Saturday. Her identity was not released.

“Measles is highly contagious and can result in serious respiratory illness, hospitalization, and in rare cases like this, death,” officials said in a news release. “We encourage residents to stay informed, follow guidance from public health officials, and take appropriate steps to protect themselves and their families.”

While severe measles cases are uncommon, health officials said the death underscores the risks associated with the virus and the importance of recognizing symptoms early, consulting health care providers and following recommended public-health measures.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office is working with the Pennsylvania Department of Health on the case.
