The Morrilton City Council has passed the first reading of an ordinance that would streamline the process that residents must now go through in order to keep poultry and rabbits on their property. In Monday night’s regular monthly meeting, Council Member Richard DeLuca explained the number of requests the Planning and Zoning Commission receives from residents to keep rabbits and poultry on their property has significantly increased over the last two years, and the purpose of the ordinance is to make the permit process a lot faster and cheaper…
“We went ahead and adopted a change to the Planning & Zoning, and what we’re asking is to make it an ordinance now where (City Inspector) Greg (Woodard) can just approve a minimum number of chickens under certain conditions on his discretion,” DeLuca said. “Then, if there’s a problem the neighbors can always appeal to Planning & Zoning, but this make it cheaper and easier for the citizens…”
The first reading passed on a 7-1 vote with Council Member Greg Wiedower casting the lone dissenting vote…
In other action taken on Monday, the Council gave authorization to sell the city-owned portion of Lentz Drive located next to Farm Bureau that was closed when Casey’s was built and the lot the city owns behind the TOLM Group facility, approved all three readings of an ordinance to levy the 2026 taxes collected in 2027 on real and personal property, and agreed to move next month’s regular Council meeting from October 12th to October 13th due to the Columbus Day holiday. Discussion was also held, but no action taken, on a proposal for the City of Morrilton and Conway County to split the costs associated with employing a full-time grant writer for the city and county…
