To the Editor:
I’m writing in response to an Aug. 10 letter regarding shopping carts that are removed from store lots and “littered” on Allentown streets. City Council addressed this issue in the Anti Litter Ordinance. “No person shall use a shopping or grocery cart to transport groceries, goods or other items in the public right of way unless that person is the owner of the shopping or grocery cart.” Ideally, the police should be notified (non-emergency 437-7751) and a first offense citation of $50 would be issued, if someone is using a shopping cart in this manner.
If you see abandoned carts, call the Little Apple Market at 1-800-244-CART (2278). It will pick up all carts except Laneco/Food Lane, and use them in their store until they are claimed by the owner. Laneco/Food Lane should be notified directly to pick up its abandoned carts.
For the pick up of broken, unusable carts, call the Bureau of Recycling and Solid Waste at 437-8729. They are taken to the Drop Off Center and recycled.
