Mountain View Garden Club hosts Carbondale Area teacher

The Mountain View Garden Club hosted Carbondale Area School District teacher Alexandra Higgins at its Aug. 18 meeting.

Higgins delivered an educational briefing on hydroponics. She provided a list of basic supplies needed to get started and some examples of the types of materials like rock wool and dried clay available to plant the seeds.

Higgins also presented a list of pros and cons of hydroplaning at home. The bottom line, for those who would like to try their hand at this method of gardening, is it’s a wonderful way to harvest fresh, homegrown produce, herbs, and flowers year-round in their home. Recommended reading is a book titled “Hydroponics: The Essential Guide” by Andy Jacobson.

Valley Community Library seeks vendors for Fall Fair

The Valley Community Library is seeking vendors and crafters for its second annual Fall Fair. The family-friendly event will be held Saturday, Oct. 3, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Vendor and crafter applications are available on the library’s website and will be accepted until Sept. 28. The library is also accepting donations of baked goods and raffle baskets. For more information, email Kwallo@albright.org.

The Fall Fair will feature unique goods from local vendors, local authors and children’s activities.

The Valley Community Library is located at 739 River St., Peckville, and serves residents in Archbald, Blakely, Dickson City, Jessup, Throop and Olyphant.

Individual Abilities in Motion to hold ‘I AM Bingo’ fundraiser

Nonprofit organization Individual Abilities in Motion (I AM) will hold its upcoming annual fundraiser, “I AM Cash & Prize Bingo,” on Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Holiday Inn Scranton East – Dunmore, 200 Tigue St., Dunmore.

Doors will open to the public at 1 p.m., with the first round of games kicking off promptly at 3 p.m.

Presented by the McGowan Foundation, the bingo event will feature a total of 16 core games, tailored with cash and prize themes. In addition to the regular program, guests can look forward to four exclusive special games, door prizes, curated basket raffles and a 50/50 drawing. Standard bingo books and daubers are included with entry, while extra game sheets, food and beverages will be available for purchase on-site throughout the afternoon.

All proceeds raised from the event directly fund I AM’s Get Out, Get Active Program. This initiative is a blend of social events and adaptive outdoor adventure activities designed to empower, challenge and inspire individuals living with mobility impairments across Northeast Pennsylvania. The program creates an inclusive environment where individuals with shared physical experiences can connect and build lasting community bonds to support each other all while having fun along the way.

Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door. Marywood hosts “25 in 25: Additions to The Maslow Collection since 2001” exhibit

The Maslow Study Gallery for Contemporary Art at Marywood University is presenting “25 in 25: Additions to The Maslow Collection since 2001” to begin Marywood’s fall semester exhibition schedule.

Featuring 25 works added to the collection over the past 25 years, the exhibition offers a focused look at the continued growth and evolution of The Maslow Collection since its relationship with Marywood University began.

“25 in 25” also coincides with the Marywood Art Department Alumni Exhibition, on view through Sept. 19 in the Mahady Gallery, celebrating 25 years since the opening of the Insalaco Studio Arts Center. Together, the exhibitions mark a quarter-century of artistic growth, collecting and creative life at Marywood.

“25 in 25” also serves as a preview to “An Enduring Vision: Richard Maslow and The Maslow Collection” a major exhibition opening Sept. 25 across the Maslow Study Gallery for Contemporary Art, Mahady Gallery and Suraci Gallery.

Presented in tribute to the late Richard Maslow (1932–2024), the exhibition will bring together many of the artists and works he most admired while tracing the history, development, and enduring legacy of The Maslow Collection. An opening reception will be held Oct. 8 from 5 to 7:30 p.m.
