(WJET/WFXP) — A local pet store is offering the chance to protect native and non-native fish.
Buzz N’ B’s Aquarium and Pet Shop is partnering with the Erie Zoo’s Last Chance Lagoon, providing a safe and ecologically responsible way to give away unwanted goldfish and koi.
The pet shop will hold an intake event on Saturday, September 26 from 12 to 4 p.m. in recognition of Neighborhood Pet Store Day. The shop is located at 2500 Yoder Drive in Erie.
The Last Chance Lagoon offers permanent sanctuary for unwanted goldfish and koi. The fish are quarantined and undergo a vet check to ensure their health before entering the lagoon, according to the zoo’s website.

The lagoon helps prevent ecological damage — such as overpopulation, decreased biodiversity and competition with native species — that can come from releasing non-native fish into local watersheds.
As part of Neighborhood Pet Store Day, the shop will also offer exclusive deals and specials as well as local pet resources with the Companion Animal Coalition and other community partners. A Facebook post from Buzz N’ B’s describes the day as Black Friday in September, “but with a local pet store twist.”
