WASHINGTON (WHP) — President Donald Trump took a shot at Gov. Josh Shapiro as Pennsylvania continues to grapple with its ongoing measles outbreak.

“They’ve got a bad governor in Pennsylvania, people just don’t know it,” Trump said Friday afternoon. “He’s close to incompetent.”

As of Thursday, the CDC reported that Pennsylvania has had more measles cases than any other state this year.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said part of the reason why is because Shapiro has reportedly refused help from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Kennedy said the CDC has been able to “end the outbreaks” in states like South Dakota and Texas.

“One of the problems with Pennsylvania is that the governor has, until very recently, refused to cooperate with CDC,” Kennedy said. “When I offered them to Governor Shapiro, he said, ‘No, we don’t need your help.'”

Shapiro has accused Kennedy of spreading “conspiracy theories” after the CDC didn’t add four reported measles-associated deaths to its nationwide statistics.

“RFK chose to sow doubt, play politics, direct the CDC not to acknowledge these deaths, and even accuse me of fabricating these tragedies,” Shapiro wrote on social media earlier this month.

Pennsylvania Secretary of Health Debra Bogen wrote a letter to the CDC on Friday requesting its help, but only on the condition that CDC publicly recognizes the reported deaths in Pennsylvania.

“The CDC’s choice not to publicly recognize the deaths undermines our response. For this reason, if CDC is unable to transparently and accurately communicate information about those measles-associated deaths, the Department will respectfully rescind our request for a CDC Epi-Aid,” Bogen wrote in the letter.

Kennedy said Friday that “CDC has not yet received information about the measles deaths.” He said the CDC will update its website when it does hear about the deaths.
