James Gaughan
OBITUARY
James Gaughan, born November 19, 1949, passed away surrounded by the love of his family on Thursday September 17, 2026 Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late William and Elizabeth Bakaysa Gaughan. He was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend whose kindness, generosity, and quick wit touched the lives of so many.
James was a 1967 graduate of St. Patrick’s High School in Scranton. Following high school, he proudly served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. After his military service, James dedicated 30 years to the Scranton Department of Public Works, where he worked as a manager in the road paving division.
A lifelong outdoors man, James was an avid hunter and a proud member of his family hunting club, the Log Cabin Rod and Gun Club in Dushore, Pennsylvania. He treasured the time spent outdoors with family and friends and enjoyed the traditions and memories created there over the years. While James had many interests and accomplishments throughout his life, his greatest joy was his family, especially his grandchildren. During his retirement years, he lovingly cared for his grandchildren on a daily basis.
He cherished every moment with them and took great pride in watching them grow. His grandchildren knew him not only as their grandfather but also as someone who was always there for them, offering his time, his love, and his wisdom.
James was kind, selfless, and generous. He had a quick wit and was never afraid to speak his mind, and he will be remembered for his big heart, strong character, devotion to his family, and the countless ways he quietly cared for the people he loved.
James is survived by his children, Maureen Carlton of Scranton and her companion, James Mangan; and Patrick Gaughan and his wife, Kerri, of Clarks Summit; and his beloved grandchildren, Dr. Blake Carlton III, and fiancé Olivia Viscomi, , Connor Carlton, Quinn Gaughan, and Colin Gaughan. He was preceded in death by his brothers, William Gaughan and Thomas Gaughan.
He is survived by his brother Jack and wife Marie Gaughan . He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, whom he loved dearly, as well as extended family and friends who will forever remember his generosity and the special place he held in their lives. James leaves behind a lifetime of memories and a family who will carry his love with them always. His presence will be deeply missed, but the lessons he taught, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave so freely will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.

Friends will be received on Monday September 21, 2026 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the Albert P. O’Donnell Funeral home 2025 Green Ridge Street, Dunmore.
