Donovan Alvarez scored on a one-yard run midway through the fourth quarter to break a scoreless tie and the Exeter Eagles went on to beat Ephrata 7-0 in a Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 2 football opener on Friday night.
Alvarez plunged in for the game’s only score with 6:13 left and Exeter’s defense did the rest.
Exeter held Ephrata to 132 yards of total offense, 77 on the ground.
Exeter (3-1, 1-0 LL Section 2) had 175 yards in total offense, 132 coming on the ground.
Joshua Jackson was the Eagles’ leading rusher, gaining 70 yards on 14 carries. Alvarez had 59 yards on 15 carries. Exeter quarterback Aidan Gerhart completed 8 of 11 passes for 43 yards.
Exeter hosts Gov. Mifflin (0-4, 0-1 LL) in a Section 2 game on Friday night.
Twin Valley 39, Manheim Central 0: Twin Valley’s defense got its second shutout of the season as the Raiders racked up 340 yards of total offense. Twin Valley (4-0, 1-0 LL Section 3) shut out Middletown 42-0 in Week 1. Lucas Myers gained 100 yards on 16 carries and scored an 11-yard run. Maverik Foster rushed for two touchdowns (4 and 5 yards) with his first putting the Raiders ahead 6-0. Twin Valley hosts Garden Spot in an LL Section 3 game on Friday night.
Conestoga Valley 35, Gov. Mifflin 12: The Mustangs remain winless on the season after opening LL Section 2 play with a loss at home. Patrick Steuer scored both of the Mustangs’ touchdowns. They play at Exeter on Friday night in a Section 2 contest.
Schuylkill Valley 45, Columbia 34: The Panthers opened LL Section 5 by outscoring Columbia in a game that totalled 79 points. Schuylkill Valley improves to 3-1 overall, 1-0 league and plays defending Section 5 champion Berks Catholic at the Saints’ home field on Friday. The Saints won last year 55-19.
Berks Catholic 38, Hamburg 7: The Saints got their first win of the season in their LL Section 5 opener against the Hawks. Berks Catholic hosts Schuylkill Valley Friday night in a key Section 5 game, while Hamburg (2-2, 0-1) hosts Pequea Valley.
Daniel Boone 34, Octorara 28: The Blazers evened their overall record to 2-2 with a win in their LL Section 4 opener. Daniel Boone is at Lampeter-Strasburg on Friday night.
Pequea Valley 30, Kutztown 8: The Cougars dropped their opener in LL Section 5 play and fall to 1-3 overall.
Elco 21, Conrad Weiser 12: Elco knocked Conrad Weiser from the unbeaten ranks as both opened play in Section 4. The Scouts (3-1, 0-1) go to Octorara this coming Friday hoping to get to 1-1 in Section 4.
Solanco 48, Muhlenberg 14: In a non-league game involving two LL teams, Solanco upped its record 4-0 while the Muhls dropped to 1-3 overall. Muhlenberg opens Section 2 play on Friday night, hosting Lebanon.
Penn Manor 41, Reading High 8: The Red Knights dropped to 1-3 overall in losing their LL Section 1 opener. Reading High is at Wilson on Friday night.
Garden Spot 52, Fleetwood 14: Beau Fegely gained 60 yards rushing in the Tigers’ loss to Garden Spot, as the Tigers are now 2-2, 0-1 Section 3. Fleetwood is at Manheim Central on Friday night.
