PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The South Philly Food Co-Op brought neighbors together Sunday for Harvest Jawn, its annual fall street festival featuring food, music, local vendors and family activities.

“Harvest Jawn is a very Philly thing; we are very local-oriented,” said Ashley Gonzalez, marketing and outreach manager for the South Philly Food Co-Op.

The community-owned grocery store hosted the festival as part of its mission to serve the surrounding neighborhood.

“South Philly Food Co-Op is a community-owned grocery store. Our mission is using food as a force for good,” Gonzalez said.

The family-friendly festival featured more than 40 vendors, including food trucks and a craft fair, along with music and activities for children.

“I’m glad that I came here cause there’s lots of food and I see stuff animals and stuff and a bouncy house,” said Bentley Depaula of South Philadelphia.

Rain threatened the celebration, but the yearly tradition continued.

“I’m glad that the rain stopped, and yes, I was worried when it was raining,” Depaula said.

Local nonprofits also participated. Homies Helping Homies used the festival to recruit volunteers and connect residents with resources.

“We are a mutual aid organization that’s based out of the Point Breeze & Grey’s Ferry community; we do 6 distributions a month,” said Anthony Adams, co-founder of Homies Helping Homies.

Organizers said the festival is one way to show appreciation for the neighborhood the co-op calls home.

“It is really nice. It is really good,” said Romny Volquez of South Philadelphia.
