ERIE, Pa. — Firefighters from across the country are coming to Erie for a high-intensity competition that will put their strength, speed and emergency response skills to the test.
The Firefighter Challenge brings firefighters together for a series of events designed to mirror the physical demands and pressure of real-life emergency calls.
Competitors will climb, handle hoses, simulate forcible entry and complete rescue tasks — all while racing against the clock.
The challenge tests many of the skills firefighters rely on when responding to emergencies, including strength, endurance, speed and coordination.
For retired Erie-area firefighter Darrell Meyers, the competition brings back memories of one of the most memorable experiences of his career.
Meyers competed in the World Challenge in Las Vegas in 2004 after qualifying alongside members of the Erie Fire Department.
“The most special year for me was 2004, when some of the guys from the Erie Fire Department and myself qualified to go to the World Challenge in Las Vegas, Nevada, and we went out there to compete,” Meyers said.
Meyers said the experience was especially meaningful because of the camaraderie he shared with Erie firefighters, who invited him, a local volunteer, to compete alongside them.
“The experience of being in Vegas running this event, it was just surreal,” he said.
Now, 12 years into retirement, Meyers is competing again.
The event gives firefighters an opportunity to test themselves against other competitors while highlighting the physical and technical skills required in the fire service.
